I don’t know what I’m writing about. There are no characters, no storyline, just word, a beginning and an end. That’s all.
Wow. Morbid. I’ve even surprised myself.
I pushed my aching legs, pleading with them to take me further and faster. The wretched trees zoomed past me, waving their empty branches. The decrepit path was uneven and I kept stumbling.
Why was I running? Was I digging myself even deeper into something that I wasn’t even sure of? I didn’t know, but, I was about to find out. All I knew was that I had to get there to protect the lives of those I held close to my heart.
My foot caught on something, a stone, a branch, I don’t know, and I fell. I groaned loudly, wincing at the metallic taste in my mouth. I sighed, dragging myself up, and shooting off again.
The useless path gave way to a dirt track, and I pounded on, ignoring my legs, who were screaming in protest, shutting out my feet’s wails and moans. Only one thing was on my mind, and that was getting there in time.
I felt moisture on my forehead that wasn’t sweat. I looked up to the starless night’s sky. Luck was not on my side where visibility was concerned. However, I was grateful for the cooling properties of the drizzle.
I skidded to a halt noiselessly. I wasn’t too late. He was looming over them, while they cowered in the brush, whimpering loudly.
“Leave them alone. They did nothing wrong.” I called out to him, and he turned, distracted.
“But, they shall suffer for your mistakes...” he replied, his sadistic grin presenting his white teeth. I gritted my teeth, and clenched my fists.
I launched myself at him, only then noticing the weapon in his hand. I shouted at the two children in front of me, screaming at them to run. They did as they were told. I wrestled with him, and in the end, he shoved me off him.
Before I could gather myself, he already had his foot on my chest, and gun pointed at my stomach. I drew breath, staring him dead in the eye, challenging him. The look in his eyes was telling me ‘Scream’. I refused.
He released the bullet. I forced my eyes to stay open as it tore through my flesh. Pain raced through my veins. My vision clouded almost instantly. I watched as he took his foot off my chest, and walked away, in the direction my siblings had run.
I had to distract him, for even a few seconds. I clenched my open wound, using my other hand to pull myself up to my shaky full height. My voiced wavered as I called him, and my body wavered with my voice.
He stopped, but didn’t turn around to face me. Coward. I could only see his blurred outline now.
“I…hate you…” I fell to my knees, letting darkness take me as my head hit the cold ground.
