I was in a bad mood. Spoilers for those who don’t know who the killer in my CSI fic. Which includes everyone except Sara. Oh well.
Kairi closed her eyes as Kadaj pressed the barrel of the gun to the pillow, waiting for the finale bang. Waiting for the bullet to embed itself into her brain. Waiting for the bang.
It came. Two bangs.
The first one was not from the gun but the door as Sora kicked it open, and knocked Kadaj aside. However, Kadaj still had a hold on the gun, and pulled the trigger. That was the second bang. The scene then blurred before Kairi’s eyes as overwhelming pain overcame her body. Blood blossomed on her clothes. It took her a second to process the thought, but she finally did.
I’m dying, aren’t I?
Sounds began to fade from Kairi’s ears as she began to slip in and out of consciousness. She did not try to keep her eyes open, there was no point. Another bang faintly reached her ears, and from what she could make of it, Sora punched Kadaj into unconsciousness, probably even a coma.
She felt herself growing cold, and then warmth enveloped her body. Kairi, thinking she died, had to take a couple seconds to realize that Sora was cradling her in his arms.
“Sora… I…” Kairi said weakly but he ‘shhhed’ her.
“Don’t,” he said, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek, “you have all the time in the world.”
Kairi then smiled, and gave a weak little laugh, which just made Sora’s heart ache. It was the first time she had laughed in a long time. She was laughing for him. He thought her laugh sounded a bit like windchimes.
“Sora, Sora… always so naïve.” She sighed. “The fact is, Sora, I have a bullet wound to the chest, and am not going to live…” Her voice began to fade at the end, and Sora felt himself holding back tears. She couldn’t die. She couldn’t. He thought all stories ended happily ever after… why not theirs? It tore himself apart. She was dying because he was too late.
“You’re going to live…” Sora protested, and Kairi shook her head, and he noticed her eyes were starting to cloud. Sora now let the tears roll freely down his cheeks. She was at death’s door.
Surprisingly, Kairi found enough strength to reach up and wipe his tears away, and pull his head down for a kiss. His lips brushed against hers, light as a feather, but the kiss tasted of blood and tears. Kairi was the first to pull away, and Sora noted that her body was becoming limper.
“Now… you better let me say what I’m going to say…” She said, softly. Her eyes met his. “I love you…”
Sora let the tears come again. He wasn’t ashamed to cry. He had loved her all along. “And I love you, Kairi…”
But her body had already become limp, her eyes closed, before he said those five words.
She never heard them.
