LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG story which is based on the typical V.C Andrews formula. Also the most depressing thing ever.
1st Book: Joy
2nd Book: Envy's Waters*
3rd Book: Seeing Red
4th Book: Tears of Plenty*
5th Book: Lonely Views*
THIS BIT GIVES THE PLOTS OF THEM IN HUGE DETAIL RUN IF YOU ARE SPOILERIPHOBIC.
First Book: Joy is 15, lives with her single mother Bethany who is 30. Bethany dies. Joy's only remaining relative, her mother's older sister Alison, lives at a convent so Joy is sent there. Her aunt likes her and most of the nuns do as well, but a few think her 'sinful' because she has had boyfriends, has rather liberal opinions etcetera. It turns out Alison entered the convent because she fell in love with Bethany, and eventually Alison rapes Joy. The craziest of the nuns who don't like her slowly poisons her, but this is found out and the nun is sent to prison. Joy runs away. About a year passes in this book.
Second Book: Joy goes back to where she lives with her mother and a neighbour sends her to live with Yolanda, a strange 55-ish woman in her cottage by a lake. Eventually Joy finds Yolanda's "grandson" Marcello, who has no idea what sex are and thinks of sex/women/girls (Joy) as evil. Yolanda is unnaturally fixated on Marcello and put those ideas into his haed. Joy uncovers that Marcello was actually the child of some teenage girl who had been sexually abused (raped) by her father, as had her sisters, was taken in by Yolanda when she was pregnant, who drowned herself in the lake shortly after she had Marcello. Joy and Marcello fall in love and she convinces him that women are NOT evil, much to Yolanda's jealousy and displeasure. Joy becomes pregnant, Yolanda becomes angry and locks Joy and Marcello in different parts of the house. She says she killed Marcello, reveals Joy and Marcello were cousins, and tortures Joy, planning to starve her to death. Joy kills Yolanda and flees. This book takes about a year and a half.
Third Book: Joy is on the run, but taken in by Luther De Ven, becomes obsessed with her and makes her marry him, threatening to kill them both. She goes to the police about Yolanda and finds that Yolanda didn't kill Marcello, and had fed him so he wouldn't die, but did drug, rape and torture him. However, when Joy killed Yolanda he died of starvation. Joy gives birth to Don. Luther eventually (after 2 years) gets her pregnant again. About this time she kills him and covers it up. She has a daughter, Alexis. Then Alison tracks her down and tries to apologise for everything. Joy lunges on her while they are standing on some stairs, they both fall to their deaths. This book takes about 3 years.
Fourth Book: Alexis and Don were adopted, Alexis is 12, Don is 15. Alexis is relatively happy, Don tracks her down. Don was not happy, since the guy who adopted him molested him. Court case, guy-who-adopted-Don-chucked-in-prison, Alexis's adoptive parents adopt him as well. Don both grows completely obsessed with Alexis, depressed, and insane. He tells Alexis snippets of information about their past he found out, including Joy killing two people. This all culminates with him raping her, then trying to convince her to let him kill her, then he would do the same. In a struggle, she accidentally kills him. Afterwards, urged on by his snippets of information, Alexis investigates her family history and discovers about Joy, Marcello, Luther etcetera. She also discovers that Joy herself was either Bethany's child with her father who sexually abused her, or her brother who it was claimed she had an incestuous relationship with, who later killed himself, his (and Bethany's) sister Jasmine, and their father. Alexis has the baby prematurely (about 8 months in), and dies in childbirth, only for the baby to be stillborn.
Fifth Book: Told from the PoV of Jasmine. Her father, Henry, sexually abuses her and her sister Bethany. Her sister Alison is at college (he abused her too) and Rebecca (Marcello's mother) drowned herself. Henry can't see he's abusing his daughters, even when he's doing it. Jasmine's brother James seems unable to think of Bethany, Alison and Rebecca, as sisters, and thinks them random girls his father kidnaps, sexually abuses and kills (ie. he thinks Henry's killed Alison and Rebecca, and Bethany's next). He doesn't see Jasmine or know she exists. Jasmine has this boyfriend called Travis, who gets her pregant (this was a plan so he could marry her and she could live with him) and dies whilst seeing her (he falls from her window), Jasmine is mind-breakingly depressed and Bethany becomes angry at her "weakness", beats her up (not knowing Jasmine was pregant) and makes her miscarry. Bethany and James are lovers, James cannot see it as incest, and Bethany just appreciates that he loves her. However Bethany gets pregant, and Jasmine decides to forgive Bethany over the miscarraige, and gets her away to a friend that will look after her until Bethany can sustain herself. However, James thinks Henry has killed Bethany, thinks Jasmine is the next one, but sometimes sees Jasmine as Bethany and he rapes her. Henry also focuses his sexual attention on Jasmine. Jasmine begins to suspect she's pregnant again when James thinks Henry will kill Jasmine 'slowly and painfully' and shoots her, Henry and himself.
