The sky is eerie shades of red and black, as though it is reflecting the world below. Nothing moves. What was only two hours ago a thriving, busy marketplace is now lifeless, dead.
A few rats scurry around the desolate, dusk time scene. They are searching for food. It doesn't take them long.
Minutes later, the rats are disturbed. Three large, black vans appear at the scene. The rats run off; they know they can return to their feast later at night.
Men step off the van. They are wearing their black uniforms, carrying their large guns. They are searching for survivors. A particularly bold rat darts out from under the shadows. It is quickly dispatched.
"Jonathan," says one man, breaking the silence. "Don't waste good bullets on rodents."
Jonathan shrugs. He says nothing. The men continue their search for survivors, but there are none to be found.
One man steps into a van, returning with a bottle of a suspicious clear liquid. The other men all know what it is, and its purpose as well. It is an acid; a very specific sort of acid. It only destroys organic matter: the bodies, their clothes, the rats. There has been a mistake. There is no lesson to be learnt from Zipler Square. It shall serve instead as a warning, a warning for people to stay true to their religion. There shall be no one to tell them otherwise. No one knows of the acid.
The bodies disappear, fizzling away into nothing. Some rats let out horrible squeaks as they too are killed; others have somehow resigned themselves.
The acid is returned to the van. The men all return to the three vans they came in, to return to headquarters. They shall be shot. No one shall be able to reveal that Zipler Square was not a warning from god, not even under hypnosis. No one shall even know, except their leader.
Their leader is not human and cannot be hypnotised.
The world has been like this for seven centuries. Their leader is a true conservative at heart. One should never do anything for the first time.
It has not been the first time their leader has provided false instructions to kill.
